Are you building a new home or thinking about a few renovations to your current kitchen? In either situation, there are some things you’ll have to consider when choosing what cabinets to install.

One of those things? Cabinet type! It certainly isn’t the first thing to cross your mind when building a new kitchen, but cabinet type plays a huge part in its visual appeal.

There are three main types of cabinets: base cabinets, wall cabinets, and tall cabinets. Here is a more in-depth look at each type.

Typically about 2-feet deep and 3-feet tall, base cabinets commonly more storage space than meets the eye. The reason for that? Shelving is often found not just inside the cabinet, but also on the inside portion of the cabinet door. Therefore, this is a great option if you have a surplus of items to store in the kitchen. Base cabinets most often sit on the floor and come with a bottom drawer, called a “toekick” drawer.

Wall cabinets are usually about 1-foot deep (though they are sometimes a few inches deeper). You guessed it, these are the upper cabinets that get installed on your walls! One of the main differences between these and base cabinets – other than their location, of course – is that they never have drawers.

With a typical height of about 7 to 8 feet, tall cabinets are typically used as pantries and storage areas for taller items, such as brooms or hanging coats. They are also known as “pantry cabinets” or “utility cabinets”. They’re commonly used by homeowners who are looking for elongated design in their kitchen.
